Examples of Engraving

A photograph, a name and dates, a scene, or a line of scripture, engraved into the wood itself. On maple and cherry a photograph renders with the clarity of ink on paper; on walnut it is bolder, more like an etching. Each image below is a piece that was made for a family.

The Process

Three steps. The urn is engraved only after you have approved the design.

1

Tell us about them

The name, the dates, and a photograph if you wish. We design the engraving several ways; you choose the front and the lid.

2

Choose the urn

Every urn is already built and photographed in 360 degrees. Choose the wood, and see your engraving on it.

3

Approve the design

Look it over on the urn you chose. Once you approve it, the urn is engraved and ships the next business day by USPS Priority Mail, at no charge, anywhere in the United States.

Questions before you begin are welcome by telephone at (586) 960-6790 or by email at d.flint@laserengravedurns.com.

Which Wood Takes an Engraving Best

Laser engraving works by darkening the wood it touches, so the wood you choose decides how much a portrait can say. If a photograph is the heart of the tribute, it is the one decision that matters most.

Hard Maple — the photograph wood

Light, luminous, with a fine even grain. A photograph, a signature, or a line of handwriting renders with the clarity of ink on paper. If the tribute centres on a face, maple carries it most faithfully.

Best for: photographs, portraits, handwriting.
See maple urns

American Cherry — warm and legible

The laser renders names, dates, scripture, and photographs as a deep warm brown against cherry’s amber surface — strong enough for a portrait, gentle enough to read as part of the wood rather than a mark upon it. Cherry darkens with age and the engraving holds its contrast for decades.

Best for: photographs and text, and any piece meant to deepen over time.
See cherry urns

Black Walnut — deep colour, bold engraving

Our darkest wood, and dark wood keeps an engraving quiet: the mark settles tone on tone into the surface rather than standing out from it. Names and dates engrave crisp and clear. A photograph is adjusted by hand until it reads on the dark wood, so it comes out bolder than the original — more like an etching. For the full photographic detail, choose maple or cherry.

Best for: names, dates, scripture, and photographs you want bold rather than soft.

Hickory, mahogany, and red hardwood join the shop regularly as well: hickory for dramatic grain, mahogany for a fine red-brown, red hardwood for something bolder. Whatever the wood, the engraving is made only after you have approved the design on screen.

Engraved Urn Questions, Answered

What size urn is needed?

The standard guide is one cubic inch of capacity for every pound of body weight before cremation. A 150 lb person needs roughly 150 cubic inches. Medium urns hold 150 cubic inches, large urns 306 to 368 cubic inches, and companion urns 372 to 488 cubic inches, enough for two people in one piece. There is nothing in between: the shop does not stock a 200 or 250 cubic inch urn, so anyone over 150 lbs needs a large. Between sizes, choose the larger; an urn that is slightly large is never a problem, and one that is slightly small is.

Can an actual photograph be engraved?

Yes, on maple or cherry, which are light enough to hold the detail. Send us the photograph and you will see it on the urn before it is engraved. The artwork is prepared so that the contrast reads correctly on wood, which is not the same as reading correctly on a screen.

How long does it take?

Every urn on this site is already built; the engraving is the only lead time. The design is approved on screen before checkout, a confirmation is sent by email, and the urn ships the next business day by USPS Priority Mail, at no charge, anywhere in the United States. Transit is typically one to three days.

What if the design is not right?

Then it is not engraved. You approve the design on screen before checkout, so the laser never touches the wood until you have confirmed it. This is the step most engravers omit, and it is the reason no piece has ever had to be remade because a family was surprised.

Can the urn be opened later?

Yes. These hardwood urns have removable lids rather than permanent seals, and every one includes a resealable biodegradable pouch for the ashes. The urn can be opened if a family later wishes to scatter a portion or divide it among relatives, without damage to the piece.

Is each urn truly one of a kind?

Yes, and literally so: the photograph on each listing is the exact urn that arrives, not a stock image of one like it. Every piece is built and hand-finished in our Michigan shop from solid hardwood, never veneer. When a piece finds its family it leaves the site for good.

Further Reading

The questions above are the ones asked most often. These go further: what cremation involves, what may be done with the ashes, and how an engraving is chosen.
